FC Sheriff's Office: IRS Impersonation Scam In Fulton County
(Lewistown, IL) -- The Fulton County Sherriff’s Office has become aware that area residents are being contacted by an IRS-impersonation scam. According to the IRS website, an aggressive and sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers has been making the rounds throughout the county. Callers are claiming to be employees of the IRS, but they are not. Deputies from the Sheriff's Office say that the con artists use fake names and phony IRS identification numbers and often have a lot of information about their targets and alter the caller ID to make it look like the IRS is calling. Deputies note that the IRS will never call to demand immediate payment, call about taxes owed without previously mailing a bill, demand a specific method of payment, ask for debit or credit card numbers over the phone or threaten to have local law enforcement arrest you for not paying.
