Retail Theft Charges Filed Against Canton Man

(Canton, IL) -- A Canton man is facing retail theft after he was charged in connection with taking a jacket from the Goodwill Store in downtown Canton earlier this month. Canton police say that 35-year old Robert E. Smith allegedly took a brown Carhart jacket that was valued at $20. Employee's of the store told police that Smith went into a fitting room with the jacket. After he came out of the fitting room, they noticed that he was more bulky. He then left the store. Police was able to locate Smith a couple of blocks from the store. He was arrested on a retail theft charge and taken to the Canton Police Department to be processed. Smith was unable to post bond and was later taken to the Fulton County Jail in Lewistown. The incident happened on Tuesday afternoon last week.

Canton Woman Charged With Disorderly Conduct (Canton, IL) -- A Canton woman is facing charges after police were notified about an incident that occurred on South Main Street. Police say they met with the victim, a 21-year old Canton female, who told them that the suspect, 20-year old Emily L. Remels, had sent a text message to the victim to meet her. Remels is dating the victim’s ex-boyfriend. Remels sent the text suggesting she was the victim’s ex-boyfriend. The victim showed up at the location that Remels sent in the text message. The victim told police that Remels had allegedly assaulted her and she then went to the Canton Police Department to report the incident. An investigation found that the altercation had taken place but no injuries occurred as a result. Remels was given a citation for disorderly conduct, a city ordinance violation. Remels was given a January City of Canton Court date in Fulton County Court in Lewistown.

Canton Traffic Stop Results In Arrest

(Canton, IL) -- A traffic stop in Canton over the weekend resulted in the arrest of a Canton man. Police say they conducted the stop at the intersection of 1st Avenue and Maple Street Sunday night at just before 11:30. The suspect, 28-year old Stanley D. Doty was observed driving a vehicle in the area of South 1st Avenue and East Linn Street. A check found that Doty had a suspended Illinois driver's license and he was also wanted on a 2015 Fulton County Warrant for an ordinance violation for a parking ticket. He was arrested and taken to the Canton Police Department where he was processed. Doty posted a $200 cash bond and a $20 processing fee. He was then released and given a January Fulton County Court date in Lewistown.

Canton Man Wanted On Active Warrant Arrested

(Canton, IL) -- A Canton man who was wanted on an active warrant was arrested last week in Canton. Police say that 37-year old Robert D. Hillman was observed leaving a tavern in the 100 block of East Elm Street Friday morning of last week at just after midnight. Officers did a records check of Hillman and found that he was wanted on a 2014 Fulton County Criminal Misdemeanor Warrant for unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. He was then arrested and taken to the Canton Police Department where he was processed for the warrant. Hillman was unable to post bond and later taken to the Fulton County Jail in Lewistown.

I-74 Accident Near Galesburg Is Fatal

(Galesburg, IL) -- An accident on I-74 near Galesburg Monday afternoon has taken the life of one of the drivers involved in the accident. Authorities say two vehicles were involved in the accident. Both vehicles were westbound on I-74 at the time of the accident. The second driver involved in the accident was taken to Galesburg Cottage Hospital. His injuries were considered serious. The accident remains under investigation.

Fatal Accident In Macinaw Remains Under Investigation

(Mackinaw, IL) -- An accident near Mackinaw over the weekend that took the life of a Dunlap man remains under investigation in Tazewell County. The Tazewell County Coroner says the accident happened on South Fast Avenue and Park Ridge Road in Mackinaw Saturday night at just before 11:30 when a male was struck by a car. The male was identified as 56-year old Robert Louis Gilder. The Tazewell County Coroner's office, Tazewell County Sheriff's Office and Illinois State Police are investigating the accident. An autopsy was completed on Sunday, The cause of death is pending a final report and toxicology.
