Inmates Busy Making Signs, Furniture, Other Products

(Undated) -- Illinois prisoners impact your everyday lives more than you may think. Every time you see a stop sign, a park bench or even a barbecue grill at a state park, you can give thanks to someone who's behind bars. About 950 inmates sign up to build the items every day. They also make office furniture, uniforms, mattresses, sheets, and even the eyeglasses for all of the state's Medicaid recipients. And contrary to popular belief, they do not make Illinois license plates.
