(Jacksonville, IL) -- A newborn baby is alive and doing well after being found inside a Jacksonville trash bin. But, police officers are reminding parents that there's a safer way to get rid of their kid if they don't want it. The state's Safe Haven Law allows parents to leave kids up to 30-days-old with police, fire, or medical officials, with no questions asked, so long as the baby has not been abused. The child will be cared for and placed up for adoption. The law has been on the books since 2001 and nearly 100 babies have been turned over safely since then. In Canton, the Canton Police Department is a Safe Haven.
