(Canton, IL) -- A native of Canton who is best known for his time in space died last week, losing his battle with cancer. Steve Nagel died of complications from cancer Thursday night. Nagel, who was the 100th astronaut to be in space talked about the honor on the space flight. The 67-year old Nagel flew two NASA Space Flights in 1985. He flew two other flights, one in 1991 and then his final space flight for NASA was in 1993. He retired as an astronaut in 1995 but continued to work for the space agency at Johnson Space Flight Center in Houston until 2011 when he retired and became a professor at the University of Missouri where he was working at the time of his death. Nagel was a 1964 graduate of Canton High School and was also a graduate of the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana.
