Canton Fire Damages Storage Shed At 8th Avenue and East Oak Street (Canton, IL) -- Fire investigators from Canton are still looking into a Wednesday morning fire at a storage building located along 8th Avenue and East Oak Street. Investigators say that although they continue to look into the fire, they believe it is suspicious in nature. Firefighters were dispatched to the scene at just before 5:45 and upon arrival found a 21 bay storage building with smoke coming from the west side and fire all the way down the east side of the structure. Crews had to gain entry to all 12 storage units on the east side of the building to extinguish the fires in each bay. Off duty Canton firefighters were called to the scene and the Copperas Creek Fire Department manned the Canton Fire Station while firefighters were on the scene. Officials from the Canton Fire Department say that firefighters were able to get the blaze under control in about 20 minutes. They remained on the scene while the hotspots were put out in each of the bays. Assisting the Canton Fire Department was the Canton Police Department, Copperas Creek Fire Department, Fulton County EMA ambulance service and Ameren Illinois. The amount of damage the fire caused to the storage shed is estimated to be over $100,000. Canton Fire Investigators as well as the Illinois State Fire Marshall's Office are continuing to look into the fires cause.
Canton Man Wanted On Warrant Turns Self In (Canton, IL) -- A Canton man wanted on two warrants turned himself in to Canton police earlier this week. Police say that 31-year old Brian E. Thurman turned himself in at the Canton Police Department Wednesday morning at just before 6:15. Police say that Thurman turned himself in on a 2014 Fulton County Misdemeanor Warrant for Trespass to property and also a 2014 Fulton County Felony Warrant for aggravated battery. During their investigation, police also discovered that he was also wanted in connection to a domestic situation earlier this month. Police say that he had a pending case from August 8th that took place in the 400 block of West Locust Street when he allegedly was involved in a physical altercation with a Canton woman who was seven months pregnant. Thurman was charged additionally with domestic battery, aggravated battery and violation of an order or protection. He was processed on all of the charges at the Canton Police Department. Thurman was later taken to the Fulton County Jail in Lewistown.
Peoria Federal Grand Jury Indicts Brothers On Fraud Charges (Peoria, IL) -- A Federal Grand Jury in Peoria has indicted two brothers who were the former owner and operators of a Fast Stop Service Station. 50-year old Shaher Mizyed of Naperville along with 46-year old Mohammad Mizyed were indicted on Wednesday and are accused of failing to report over $6-million in gross receipts received and conspiracy to commit mail fraud related to about $200,000 in medical and other benefits fraudulently obtained from the state. The two brothers have been identified as the owners of Tira Oil LLC on North Prospect in Peoria. If they are convicted on the conspiracy charge they would face up to five years of jail time.
Iowa Man Released After Being Charged With Disorderly Conduct In Pekin (Pekin, IL) -- An Iowa man who was arrested in Lincoln just a day after he allegedly attempted to lure a child from a Hardee's located in Pekin has been released from the Tazewell County Jail. Authorities say they picked up 55-year old Thomas Anthony of Dubuque after he allegedly approached a young boy while at the Walmart in Lincoln. Pekin police were trying to find Anthony as a person of interest after he allegedly tried to lure a six-year old boy out of the Pekin Hardee's on Sunday. Anthony was booked into the jail on a misdemeanor disorderly conduct charge but has been released on a notice to appear. He is due to appear in Tazewell County Circuit Court in mid September.
