Illinois Consumer Expert Warns Caller ID Spoofing on the Rise
(Undated) -- Illinoisans are reporting receiving calls that appear to be from a local business, utility company or the I-R-S, but they are actually scammers in disguise. That’s according to Steve Bernas with the Better Business Bureau. He says these callers have purchased lists of cell and home phone numbers and are using 'robo-call' capabilities to randomly dial. Bernas says the scammer tries to trick the person on the line into handing over important information, such as bank account numbers or Social Security numbers. He advises Illinoisans to always use caution over the phone, and to do research before giving anyone personal information.
