4-H Incubation and Embryology Project Offered BY U of I Extension
(Lewistown, IL) -- Life, in all its diverse forms, is a wonder that students can learn to appreciate and understand. In the 4-H Incubation and Embryology Project, students ranging from pre-school to high school seniors learn about embryonic development as they care for developing chicken eggs. During the three week incubation period, students learn not only the scientific facts of embryology, they learn that life involves caring, nurturing, struggles and joys. Students study embryonic development by incubating eggs, hatching and caring for chicks and developing exhibits that demonstrate what they have learned. The 4-H program provides teachers with incubators, egg turners, fertile eggs, student manuals, a teacher's guide and training. The training sessions provide information on setting up incubator, how to increase odds of a successful hatch and how to care for the chicks.
