Statewide Gay Marriages Permitted Next Month
(Springfield, IL) -- Same sex couples in Illinois will be allowed to marry next month. Bernard Cherkasov, with Equality Illinois, says those who are already engaged in a civil union won't have to do much to change their status. The marriage equality law takes effect statewide on June 1st. Couples can have their clergy members marry them or they can go to the Justice of Peace to get it done. More than one-thousand same sex couples across the state have already tied the knot. That's because the counties where they live chose to expedite the law and let them get married early after a judge ruled they didn't have to wait.
