Electrical Short In Vehicle Determined To Cause Canton Fire

November 24, 2014

(Canton, IL)  –  Firefighters from the Canton Fire Department responded on Thursday to an address located in the 600 block of South 5th Avenue on the report of several explosions from inside a building.  The structure is the Ameren Illinois facility.  Upon arrival yesterday afternoon at about 4:30, fire crews found moderate black smoke coming from the rear of the building.  A box alarm 400 was called, bringing off duty firefighters to the scene.  Upon entry of the building, the attack crew found heavy smoke and a service vehicle to be on fire.  Firefighters were able to put the fire out in about 10 minutes.  Fire crews found no extension of the fire but did find smoke damage throughout the entire building.  Canton Fire Investigators determined that the fire started from an electrical short in the vehicle.
