Remap Ballot Initiative Still In Deep Water

June 27, 2014

(Bloomington, IL)  --  The head of the state Board of Elections doesn't think the group pushing to change the state's redistricting process will be able to produce enough signatures in time to get on the November ballot.  Board Chairman Jesse Smart says nearly 32-thousand of the signatures submitted by Yes for Independent Maps are from people who signed more than once, and others that don't make the cut. The Yes for Independent Maps group is getting a second chance to try and prove their signatures make the cut, but they have just a few short weeks to make it happen.  That's because Smart says no matter what they decide, the issue will more than likely be challenged in court.  The court will need time to review the case and make a ruling by August 23rd, when the Board of Elections makes its final preparations to print the ballot.
