Last Week’s Rains And Cool Weather Slow Down Planting

May 21, 2014

(Undated)  --  Recent rains and cool weather slowed planting as we hear in the weekly crop report.  Rainfall was nearly an inch above normal last week, not leaving much time to get work done in the fields says Illinois Crop Statistician Todd Ballard.  Some progress was made with corn.  36 percent of soybeans have now been planted, with 11 percent emerged.  13-percent of sorghum and 86-percent of oats have been planted.  Average statewide topsoil moisture stands at 23 percent surplus, 71 percent adequate and six percent short.
