Group To Turn In Signatures For Ballot Measure

(Undated) -- It looks like voters may actually get a chance to decide who'll be responsible for drawing new legislative districts. Right now the majority party in Illinois takes on the task every ten years. But Michael Kolenc, with "Yes for Independent Maps," says they usually draw the lines in a way that will help them win elections. Kolenc led the push to get an independent commission, with no conflict of interest, in charge of drawing the boundaries when the time calls for it. That would require a change in the state's Constitution. The "Yes for Independent Maps" group needed 298-thousand registered voters in Illinois to agree with them and sign their petition in order to get the measure on the ballot. Kolenc says they got far beyond that number and they're confident they'll clear any potential challenge. They'll took the petitions to the State Board of Elections yesterday.
